Dental Crowns: Everything You Need to Know

What comes to mind when you hear the words “dental crown”? For many people, dental crowns conjure up images of uncomfortable dental procedures and visits to the dentist. However, dental crowns are a very common and relatively simple dental procedure that hundreds of patients receive in our Chattanooga dental office. To break down this often misunderstood dental treatment, the specialists at Team Popp dental will take a deep dive into the world of dental crowns. We’ll cover what they are, why they might be necessary, how they are performed, and more!

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a dental restoration procedure typically done to help restore broken or damaged teeth. It involves placing an artificial cap on the existing tooth structure to protect and strengthen it. When properly cared for, a dental crown can last up to 10-15 years and help protect your tooth by tightly enveloping it.

Why do I need a dental crown?

There are a variety of reasons why dental crowns may be recommended for you. Some of the most common include:

  • Protecting a tooth after root canal treatment
  • Strengthening or improving an existing dental restoration
  • Restoring a tooth that is cracked, broken, or worn down
  • Covering discolored teeth
  • Replacing missing teeth with dental bridges
  • Improving the appearance of your smile
  • Covering dental implants

What are the different types of crowns?

At Team Popp Dental, we offer several different types of crowns to best suit our patient’s needs, including:

Porcelain fused to metal – These consist of a layer of metal with a porcelain exterior selected to match the color of your teeth, making them an excellent solution for front or back teeth.

Ceramic – Made from a single piece of ceramic, ceramic dental crowns generally provide the most natural-looking smile and are typically favored for front teeth.

Metal  – Composed of metal alloys—typically gold, copper, and other metals— these are considered one of the most durable dental crowns.

Zirconia  – Also known as “all-white” dental crowns, these are made with a single piece of zirconia and are one of the most durable options.

Temporary – Made with less durable material, such as plastic or stainless steel, temporary crowns are used to protect the tooth while the final dental crown is being made.

How does the dental crown procedure work?

The dental crown procedure generally takes two visits to complete. During the first visit, Dr. Leah Popp or Dr. Bryson Popp will take dental impressions to create custom-fitted dental crowns. They will also prepare the tooth by removing any decay and shaping the surface to fit the dental crown. Then, a temporary dental crown is placed on the tooth to serve as protection until your permanent dental crown is ready for placement.

On the second visit, your dental crown is checked for fit and color before being permanently cemented. After the dental crown procedure, you may experience a minor sensitivity or discomfort. This should go away on its own within a few days of your dental crown placement.
